Life Swordsman.
This template requires a bit of hard work in the beginning
to get you going, but provides the benefits of having
strong melee defense and life magic skills for a great
combination of vulning and tanking.
(NOTE: Using Sword as a weapon skill wastes a great
number of skill points that make your character take
longer to mature. There are a number of good hiltable
swords available that will double strike after 250 Sword.)
(UPDATE: When looking for a hiltable sword, you should
start out with a Slashing/Piercing or Piercing only sword with
the following stats - 6-12 or 7-13 and +7 Melee Defense and +7
Attack Bonus minimums. This should almost always be the first
hilt that a swordsman acquires.)

Extreme Life/Melee characters are usually started with
100 STRENGTH, 100 COORDINATION and 100 FOCUS. You could
toy with the template by sacrificing FOCUS in order to
increase your QUICKNESS to gain additional Melee Defense.
If you really do not want to deal with an extreme template
you can change the stats to 100/40/100/40/40/10 (not
recommended!)
After level 60 you could go for whatever your tastes
prefer. If you plan on having lots of vassals, go for
leadership at level 80. Otherwise you might like to use
arcane lore at 80 or lockpick at 90.
